Iconic Houses City Icons 2024 took place in Amsterdam from May 24 to 26. I had the honor of giving a lecture during the welcome reception at the Museum of Canals entitled “Coming Home to Amsterdam: A Century of City Planning”. In just 30 minutes, I gave an overview of the urban development of Amsterdam in the twentieth century, with attention to the Housing Act (1901), Plan Zuid (1915), the General Expansion Plan Amsterdam (1935), the Eastern Docklands and IJburg. Each plan left its own mark on the city. Moreover, I told the story through the lens of urban planner Jakoba Mulder, who made a major contribution to the development of the city as part of the urban planning department in the period 1930-1965. I ended my story with focussing on more recent developments like the Sluisbuurt and Haven-Stad, and the challenges the city now faces: in addition to shaping the major transitions, this is the continued pursuit of establishing an accessible, affordable and fair city.
